Protect Your Pumpkins

Each year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Baton Rouge General makes it our mission to encourage women 40 and older and those at risk for breast cancer to Protect Your Pumpkins! Although breast cancer deaths have decreased in the past two decades with impactful messages about screening, nearly 288,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. East Baton Rouge Parish has the second highest number of new breast cancer cases annually in the state, ranking just below Jefferson Parish. A mammogram is the best way to find or detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable.

Get a Pink Pumpkin

Thousands of pink pumpkins pop up overnight at Baton Rouge General's three hospital locations (Ascension, Bluebonnet and Mid City) to kick off our annual Protect Your Pumpkins campaign. We invite everyone to visit one of the pumpkin patches to take photos and to bring home a free pumpkin to display in honor of breast cancer awareness. Once the pink pumpkin patches pop up, the pumpkins will go fast, so stay tuned to see when they arrive! And if you can’t make it, don’t worry. Local Rouses markets in the Baton Rouge, Ascension and Livingston areas will be selling pink pumpkins in October while supplies last!

What do pumpkins and breast cancer awareness have in common? More than you'd think! Click here to watch the story behind the Pop-up Pink Pumpkin Patches.

Support 3D Mammograms at Mid City

We are currently working to bring a 3D machine to our Mid City campus as soon as possible. 3D mammography provides clearer images and allows radiologists to see more details in breast tissue, especially in dense breasts. BRG’s Foundation has raised $1.43 million of the $1.47 million needed to purchase a 3D mammography machine for BRG Mid City, where our High-Risk Breast Clinic operates. That clinic serves under and uninsured women with a family history or strong genetic indicators for developing breast cancer. High risk patients often require a more rigorous mammogram schedule than the standard yearly exam after age 40. Offering 3D mammography at our Mid City campus will not only ensure that the best imaging technology is available for high risk patients, it will make it easier for all the women in Baton Rouge to receive 3D mammograms when they need them.
